The Jury and the Awards of the 5th “Beyond Borders” International Documentary Film Festival of Castellorizo.

Distinguished members of the international film community form the Jury of the 5th  “Beyond Borders” International Documentary Festival, which will be held between 23rd – 30th August, 2020 in Castellorizo island, Greece.

This year’s jury consists of Barbara Wackernagel- Jacobs – Producer, Director (Head of Jury), Panagiotis Iosifelis – Screenwriter, Head of the Film Studies Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki, Margje de Koning – Αrtistic Director of Movies that Matter Film Festival, Aris Fatouros– Program Advisor at Hellenic Parliament Television Channel and Stelios Kymionis – Head of Audiovisual Archives and Education R&D at EKOME.

The jury of the Festival will award the following prizes: Best History Documentary, Best Socio-political Documentary, Best Short Length Documentary– all of them a kind courtesy of the Hellenic Parliament-, Best Greek Documentary, sponsored by Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki, the Special Award of Mediterranean Friendship by EKOME Media and the Special Award of “Odyssey” sponsored by the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad (MFA).

«Beyond Borders» is organized by the Hellenic History Foundation, in co-organization with Ecrans des Mondes (Paris) and the Society for the Restoration of Megisti, Castellorizo (Sydney), held under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, of the Municipality of Megisti, and the Embassies of Australia, the U.S. and Israel in Athens. The main sponsors are the Hellenic Parliament, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation and EKOME Media.

Barbara Wackernagel- Jacobs – Producer, Director (Head of Jury)

Barbara Wackernagel- Jacobs,  lives in Saarbrücken, Germany, and has worked since 1975, locally and federally, in the area of ​​youth unemployment, living conditions in neighborhoods and improvement of working conditions. In 1991 she became Secretary of State, and in 1996 Minister of Labor, Social Affairs, Women and Health in Saarland, Germany. In 1999, following a change of government, she devoted herself to her passion for cinema and became a producer of documentary films. With the experience of more than 20 produced films, she also became a writer and director. One of her best known works “The Sputnik Effect, 30 years more“ is a national documentary which, by comparing the situations in the United States and Germany, promotes a change of perspective in the discussion of the senior population. Her latest film “Passionate about Europe” is a compelling portrait of Jean-Claude Junker, former President of the European Commission.

Panagiotis Iosifelis – Screenwriter, Head of the Film Studies Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki

Born in Thessaloniki, Panagiotis Iosifelis is a Screenwriter, Associate Professor and Head of the School of Film, Faculty of Fine Arts, Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki. Member of Hellenic Film Academy and the Scriptwriters Guild of Greece. His work includes short and feature film scripts, TV series, documentaries and web series. Among the distinctions received by the films whose screenplay he has written, the following are indicative: Clio Awards, Branded Content Entertainment, Gold Award, New York, 2013, Cannes Lions Festival, Branded Content Entertainment, Silver Award, Cannes, 2013, 51st Thessaloniki Film Festival, Audience Award, Thessaloniki, 2010, three awards from the Panhellenic Film Critics Association, etc. He has published collections of short stories, children’s fairy tales and numerous articles.

Margje de Koning – Αrtistic Director of Movies that Matter Film Festival

After finishing her studies, Margje de Koning directed documentaries for various broadcasting companies for 12 years. For some years Margje was a teacher for documentaries at the University of Amsterdam. In 2004, Margje  became Commissioning Editor for a documentary slot of 52’ docs. This meant producing and co-producing creative single 52′-documentaries on contemporary social, social-cultural and moral issues with a strong human interest angle. The focus is on Dutch subjects but surely also on subjects from over the whole world. Since 2005, Margje de Koning has been responsible for the Television Department of IKON and on 2012 she became Head of TV, Radio and New Media programming at IKON. From 2016 IKON has been incorporated within EO with Margje de Koning as Head of Documentaries for EOdocs. Since 2019 she left the Public Broadcaster in order to become the new artistic director of the filmfestival Movies that Matter.

Aris Fatouros- Program Advisor at Hellenic Parliament Television Channel

Aris Fatouros was born in Lefkada and grew up in Athens. He is a founding member (2002) of the Hellenic Parliament Television Channel, where he works as a Program Advisor. He has worked as a production manager, producer and director. His films have won international awards. He created the microfilm program in ERT, producing 200 short films (2000-19) and great distinctions. He designed the interdisciplinary program Diaplasis, with the production of 100 student documentaries (2017-20). He has been a consultant and evaluator on the European program MFI Script 2 Film Workshops (2001-19) and a member of juries at film festivals. He wrote articles, presented conferences on film education and participated in the elaboration of studies on the appropriate policy for public television and Greek cinema. He has studied Physics, Political Science and Cinema.

Stelios Kymionis – Head of Audiovisual Archives and Education R&D at EKOME

Stelios Kymionis is Head of Audiovisual Archives and Education R&D at EKOME. He has previously worked at the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Cinematographic Archive, at the National Audiovisual Archive, at the Secretariat General of Information and Communication (curator of the audiovisual collections), as a researcher, archival documentation consultant and scientific advisor on cultural heritage management programs. He has authored articles on Greek cinema, documentary film and audiovisual archives in various academic journals.

Γεννήθηκε το Φθινόπωρο του 1990. Έχει αποφοιτήσει από το Τμήμα Δημοσίων Σχέσεων και Επικοινωνίας αλλά και από το Τμήμα Ειδικής Αγωγής του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου. Κατέχει πιστοποίηση στο σύστημα γραφής Braille και παρακολουθεί σεμινάρια στον τομέα της Συμβουλευτικής Ψυχικής Υγείας. Ασχολείται ερασιτεχνικά με την φωτογραφία και το ραδιόφωνο. Η πρώτη της φωτογραφική έκθεση είχε θέμα το νησί της Φολεγάνδρου και παρουσιάστηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη το 2017. Έχει λάβει μέρος σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις και έργα της εκτίθενται στην «Ολυμπιακή Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη Σπύρος Λούης» στο Μαρούσι στα πλαίσια της εκδήλωσης «2ο Φεστιβάλ Εικόνας Τέχνης και Πολιτισμού» για το 2017. Αγαπά… τα παιδιά, τα βιβλία, το θέατρο, την ιταλική μουσική, την ησυχία, τη χειμωνιάτικη λιακάδα, την καλοκαιρινή βροχή, τους περίπατους, τα ταξίδια που ανανεώνουν τις ανάσες της, τη γεύση του ελληνικού καφέ από την κούπα της μαμάς της. Συγκινείται με… τους γενναιόδωρους ανθρώπους, την πηγαία ευγένεια, τις ευχές, τις πράξεις που έχουν ένα τεκμήριο αγάπης μέσα τους, τα γράμματα σε σχήμα καλλιγραφικό με κόκκινο στυλό, τα βλέμματα που δεν έχουν ανάγκη από φίλτρα φωτογραφικά για να δείξουν την λάμψη τους. Επιμένει… να κοιτάζει τον ουρανό γιατί ξέρει -πια- πως δεν έχει μόνο σύννεφα αλλά έχει και ήλιο και φεγγάρι και αστέρια... Πιστεύει… στο Αόρατο, στο Καλό, στις Συναντήσεις των ανθρώπων. Αισθάνεται… Ευγνωμοσύνη, Εμπιστοσύνη, Ελευθερία… Ξεκινά… και ολοκληρώνει την ημέρα της με την ίδια πάντα ευχή… Από μικρή ονειρευόταν να σκαρώσει το δικό της περιοδικό.
